Mati Diop’s moving documentary about 26 royal treasures from the return of ancient kingdoms to the return of modern Benin is a slow burn, but once it breaks out, it completely transcends: a low-key but precise exploration of colonial heritage, cultural identity, political identity, political tensions and national pride. Really great.

Andrea Arnold Red Road,,,,, American Honeyand Fish tank– The last one is also on Mubi), and her latest movie is no exception. It is a wonderful Nykiya Adams, a disillusioned 12-year-old who suffers from her father’s quirks (which Barry Keoghan is so funny in that part), making friends with a mysterious Drifer (a sensitive Franz Rogowski) as she walks in the labour field of rural Kent of Kent. It’s just amazing shooting and complete transport.
